Demand for energy will increase dramatically in the years to come. Most energy comes from fossil fuels that releases CO2 and pollute the air. But green alternatives are emerging.
About 7 percent of the world's energy consumption comes from renewable sources. The share is growing but only slowly. By 2030 it will be 10 percent.
What is green energy?
Hydro power is the largest source of renewable energy, but solar and wind power is growing. From 2005 to 2009, the world's solar energy capacity increased 6 times, while wind energy capacity increased 2.5 times.
We can do better
There is an enormous, but unrealized, potential powering the world through green renewables. Check out our next fact to get an idea.
Excluding traditional biomass use, the share of renewable energy in global primary energy demand is projected to climb from 7 percent in 2006 to 10 percent by 2030 in the World Energy Outlook Reference Scenario. World renewables-based electricity generation – mostly hydro and wind – is projected to rise from 18 percent in 2006 to 23 percent in 2030.
