  • We use a lot of energy

The world uses almost 500 million terajoules of energy in one year. This corresponds to the energy released from the Hiroshima nuclear bomb every four seconds. A Boeing 737 can cross the Atlantic Ocean on one terajoule.

Most energy comes from fossil fuels

81 percent of the energy we use comes from burning oil, coal, and gas - also known as fossil fuels.

    Our energy consumption is increasing

Our use of energy will grow 40 percent between 2007 and 2030. If nothing changes, most of this increase will be covered by burning more coal.

    Renewable energy is rising

Today, renewable energy supplies around 7 percent of the world's energy consumption. It is projected to grow to 10 percent by 2030.

    What is renewable energy?

Main renewable energy sources include hydropower, bio-mass heating, solar power, and geothermal heating.
